The Oddfellows Arms was taken over in February by Gary and Charlie who have refurbished the inside and added a pleasant covered dining area to the rear. Over the past six months Gary and Charlie have concentrated on providing a relaxed environment offering first class food with friendly service. A quick glance at Trip Advisor shows that their efforts are being repaid with the pub showing a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.
We were warmly welcomed by the amiable landlords and, as the sun was still shining we decided to have a drink in the garden. Stylish glass doors lead out to the south-facing garden and covered dining area where Gary has recently installed a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue. The garden is a good-size and, being two sets of parents, we all noted the large bouncy castle at the far end.
Inside the pub is ‘olde-worlde’ traditional with a huge open fire in the bar and plenty of dark wood beams. The dining area is also traditional in style with tables a comfortable distance apart. The menu offers a varied selection from typical pub favourites including; beer battered cod and gammon with duck egg and homemade chunky fries to Moroccan spiced crusted lamb plus fish and vegetarian options too.
Two of us chose a starter of garlic and chilli king prawns. The prawns were sweet and juicy with just enough chilli to heat things up and beautifully presented with a with a saffron and lime mayonnaise and fresh watercress garnish. The others went for wild mushrooms with garlic and chive cream sauce on toasted ciabatta which was creamy with crunchy diced onion offsetting the silky mushrooms. The wine list is not vast but there’s something for everyone, we chose a Petit Chablis which was beautifully crisp and fresh and complemented our starters perfectly.
I was delighted with my main course – filet of Sea Bream with prawn puree and wonderfully sweet caramelised carrots. The fish was simply pan fried to perfection – tender and moist served with crunchy green beans and fresh coriander. Jeff chose the aforementioned Moroccan spiced crusted lamb which came with spicy couscous and chunky ‘salsa’ style salad including spring onions and fresh herbs from Gary’s polytunnel at the side of the pub. Our friends chose the Trio of sausages and a chicken and chorizo pizza. The sausages varied in size ranging from plump to ‘goodness are you sure you’re going to manage all those’ (he did and complimented their deliciousness). The hand made, stone-baked pizza was rustic style and generously topped with succulent chicken, rich, spicy chorizo and fresh basil and infused with a glorious, authentic wood-fired flavour.
Without needing much persuasion I opted for a mouth-wateringly tangy lemon tart served with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice-cream for dessert. My companions chose sticky toffee pudding complimented by salty caramel ice-cream, crème brûlée with a hot, caramelised crunchy top covering a light, tangy, creamy dessert served with two nutty tasting shortbread biscuits. Mm-mmm.
We ended the culinary delights with a pot of sweet and warming fresh mint tea (again picked from Gary’s herb poly tunnel).
