A thriving downland town

Storrington has had several name changes through the centuries, the Domesday Book lists 'Storghton', 'Sterington', 'Steryngton', 'Sorrington' and 'Storynton'. It wasn't until 1735 that the existing spelling 'Storrington' came into being.

The origin of the towns' name has been attributed to the Saxon word 'Stor' meaning strong and/or to the German word 'Storch' meaning Stork - these long-legged birds were common here in past centuries. The river Stor which runs through the town still retains the ancient Saxon name and feeds the Mill Pond adjacent to the library car park. A second larger pond is to be found opposite the recreation ground to the west of the town centre. Storrington was a thriving market place from the end of the 14th century until the end of the 19th. In the early part of the 20th century it became an artists commune where a number of noted poets, writers and composers settled.
