Key landmarks of Nutbourne

The village is famed for its vineyard, which produces remarkable English wine thanks to the rich Sussex soil that’s similar in compound to that of the Champagne region in France. The Vineyard has been involved in English winery innovation since 2010, and now makes between 30,000 and 50,000 bottles a year. Why not try the vineyard’s guided tours and tasting sessions, perfect for a post-walk tipple?

Beyond the residential area, through a tree-lined dirt track, you’ll find a series of mill-ponds and a great stone windmill. The mill has been in the village since 1854, and stands before the vineyard which you’ll see sloping up the incline to the east.

The village has one public house, named the Rising Sun. This 16th-century building supplies hungry revellers with proper pub grub, such as fish and chips, pies and daily specials as shown on the blackboard. The pub has been with one family, the Howards, since 1981. A decade before, local farmer Clive Allen is said to have taken his prize black steers to the bar every day for their afternoon pint!

Nutbourne is just one of the places covered by the free Sussex Local magazine delivered by hand, by local people, every month.
