Key landmarks of Fontwell

First of all, there is the racecourse, opened in 1924. This is the only National Hunt course laid out in a figure-of-eight pattern. Furthermore, it was named as the ‘Best Small Racecourse in the Southeast’ for 17 years running. The Racegoers Club decided this in a poll. Today, it hosts private and corporate events as well as year-round horse-racing.

The Old Stables at the racecourse are adjacent to a Travelodge. It serves food and real ales in the charmingly rustic environment. A lovely traditional country inn with beer garden.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is another interesting place to visit within 3 miles of the village. Original aircraft and replica Spitfire and Hurricane are on display. Also, many other fascinating pieces of aircraft memorabilia. The museum is set in the old RAF Tangmere Airfield, which makes the trip there extra special and melancholic. The airfield played a vital part in World War 2, especially during the Battle of Britain.

Also, it’s less than 5 miles to Goodwood House.

Fontwell is just one of the places covered by the free Sussex Local magazine delivered by hand, by local people, every month.
